Car Rental Deposit Not Refunded? Here's What to Do in the UAE

If your car rental deposit was not refunded in the UAE, follow this checklist: confirm the release window, request an itemised statement, dispute unfair deductions, and escalate.

First: has the release window actually passed?

Before assuming the worst — Dubai rental companies commonly release deposits 20–30 days after the car is returned, because fines and Salik crossings take weeks to post. If you are inside that window, you are probably not being ignored yet. If you paid by card hold, also allow a few bank-processing days after release. Past 30 days with silence? Work the checklist below, in order.

The escalation checklist

  1. Request the release or an itemised statement, in writing. Every deduction should carry a fine number, Salik crossing, or inspection reference — what that looks like is in Salik, fines, and your deposit.
  2. Give a written deadline. A dated message naming a 7-day deadline and your next step changes behaviour more than ten phone calls.
  3. Dispute through your card issuer. If the deposit was a card hold or charge, your bank can dispute an unreleased hold or an undocumented capture — this is the quiet superpower of paying by card (see how holds work).
  4. Escalate to the authorities. Persistent non-refunds can be raised with Dubai's consumer protection channels (the Department of Economy and Tourism handles consumer complaints); keep your contract, receipts, and correspondence together.

Preventing it next time

  • Choose companies that state the release window in the contract.
  • Prefer card holds over cash — cash refunds depend entirely on goodwill.
  • Photograph the car and fuel level at pickup and return.
  • Get the return inspection signed before you leave the lot.

The industry fix

Renters chase refunds because deposits are still collected as opaque charges. Fleets on Akara hold instead of charge, document every deduction, and release with one click — the refund chase disappears from both sides of the counter. If you run a fleet, see how vehicle rental teams use Akara; if you rent often, our guide to refund timelines sets the right expectations.
