Car Rental Holds on Your Credit Card: How They Work in the UAE

What a car rental hold on your credit card actually is, how much UAE companies block, how long the hold lasts, and the difference between a hold and a charge.

What is a car rental hold on a credit card?

A car rental hold is a pre-authorization: the rental company reserves part of your credit limit — in the UAE typically AED 1,000–2,000 for economy cars and AED 3,000–5,000 for luxury models — without actually taking the money. Nothing leaves your account. The amount is simply blocked so the company can charge documented costs later if it needs to, and released back to your available limit when the rental closes cleanly.

Hold vs charge: the difference that matters

A charge moves money out of your account; getting it back requires an actual refund transaction. A hold only reserves the amount — if the company captures nothing, the reservation simply expires or is released, and no money ever moved. That difference decides how quickly you are made whole and how much can go wrong in between. It is also why cash and cheque deposits are the worst option: they are charges by definition. Our comparison of traditional vs digital deposit collection covers this in depth.

How long does the hold stay on your card?

Rental companies in Dubai commonly release deposits within 20–30 days of return — they wait out the window in which fines and Salik crossings post (see how long refunds take and why). After the company releases, your own bank may need several additional days to drop the hold from your statement. If a hold lingers well beyond that, ask the rental company for the release reference, then take it up with your card issuer.

Practical tips before you hand over your card

  • Use a credit card, not a debit card — a debit hold blocks your real cash.
  • Confirm the exact hold amount and release window in writing.
  • Check your available limit first; the hold reduces it for the whole window.
  • Keep the return inspection report — it is your defence against late claims.

The modern version of the hold

The hold model is the right idea — what has been missing is transparency. With Akara, the hold is placed through a branded link, the customer sees the amount, the reason, and the release status the whole way through, and the fleet releases or claims with full documentation. Deposit-free-feeling checkouts, with the protection intact.
